How to Download 3D Google Earth to Rhinoceros?
Easy Workflow.

The Easiest & Fastest Method using Get3DCapture Plugin (Clear Guide + Video). Skip the manual modeling. Learn the 2026 industry-standard workflow to capture accurate urban context in minutes.

See Step-by-Step

The Professional Context Workflow

Architectural visualization and site analysis require high-fidelity surroundings. Get3DCapture provides a seamless bridge between Google Earth's massive datasets and Rhinoceros 7/8. Unlike outdated methods, this workflow is direct, maintains geographic orientation, and captures Google Earth quality textures without complex file conversions. Note: Manual scaling may be required for perfect accuracy.

Architectural Accuracy

Download site context with precise building heights and terrain elevations for site analysis.

Google Earth Textures

Capture Google Maps or Earth quality textures and urban elements like trees, streets, and facades automatically.

Step-by-Step Capture Guide

1

Initialize the Plugin

Launch Rhinoceros and type "get3dcapture" in the command line. This will trigger a specialized Google Chrome window to open.

What to look for:

A new small "PID" dialog will open. After 5 seconds press OK in the "PID" dialog. Chrome browser will open with a counter tracking frames at the top. This indicates the capture engine is ready.

Antivirus Troubleshooting

Because the extension is new and runs via a local command prompt, some antivirus systems may incorrectly flag it. If the capture window closes immediately, please add the Rhino Packages folder to your antivirus exclusion list.

C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\packages

2

Navigate & Rotate

In the newly opened Chrome browser, go to Google Earth and navigate to your desired location. Once there, rotate around the area of interest to load the 3D geometry into the cache.

PRO TIP

"Rotate 360 degrees and tilt the camera to see building facades. The more frames the counter registers, the higher the detail of your final model."

3

Capture with F12

When you are satisfied with the loaded area, simply press the F12 key on your keyboard. This notifies the plugin to finalize the collection of frames for reconstruction.

4

Import to Rhino

Switch back to your Rhinoceros window. A dialog box will appear automatically asking if you would like to import the captured geometry.

Press "YES"

The plugin will immediately begin reconstructing the geometry with geographic orientation and Google Earth quality textures directly into your active viewport.

Why Architects choose Get3DCapture

No Exporting Hassle

Say goodbye to OBJ, MTL, and texture path relinking. Everything arrives ready to render in Rhino.

Hotkey Efficiency

Focus on your design while the F12 capture workflow handles the heavy lifting of urban modeling.

Immediate Site Analysis

Perform shadow studies, zoning massing, and context visualization the same day you start a project.

Questions and Answers

Do I need to install Google Earth Pro?
No, the plugin opens a specialized Chrome browser optimized for capture. You only need the plugin installed in Rhino.
What Rhino versions are supported?
Get3DCapture works natively with Rhinoceros 7 and Rhinoceros 8 for both Windows and Mac.
Is the final model to scale?
The geometry is imported as captured from Google Earth. You may need to manually adjust the scale to match your project units (meters, feet, etc.) for architectural precision.
How much detail can I capture?
The detail depends on how much you zoom in and rotate in the browser before pressing F12. The plugin captures exactly what is cached.
What if my antivirus blocks the plugin?
Because the extension is relatively new and the capture process runs via a local command prompt process, some antivirus systems may incorrectly flag it and close it immediately. If this happens: 1. Fully uninstall the extension. 2. Temporarily disable your antivirus or add the SketchUp Plugins folder to your exclusion list. Typical path: C:UsersYOUR_USERNAMEAppDataRoamingMcNeelRhinocerospackages
